LT the MVP Creaps Closer to Top 5

The Nick Saban fiasco has drawn attention away from Ladainian Tomlinson winning the NFL MVP after putting up possibly the single greatest offensive season in NFL history.

This leads me to ask one of my never-ending Top 5 questions….who are the top 5 NFL RBs of all time?

1) Jim Brown - the GOAT. Only nine seasons (and 14 games per season) but 5.2 yards a carry as well as 106 Rushing TDs and 12,312 rushing yards (both records when he retired), and by the way, folks are still scared of him.

2) Emmitt Smith - the ultimate winner. He was never the biggest, the fastest or the most illusive but he rumbled for more years (18,355) than anyone else. He was also a scoring machine racking up 175 TDs (164 rushing and 11 receiving). His three Super Bowl rings and playing through injuries make him a winner and a warrior (and we later learned he is a dancer as well).

3) Walter Payton - the biggest heart. He did it all, and did it the right way. He died far too young but no one will forget his classic performances in a Bears uniform - running over would-be tacklers. Too bad that in the 1986 Super Bowl the Fridge got the press and the rushing TD.

4) Barry Sanders - could take it to the house on every snap (as evidenced by his 5.0 yards per carry) and indeed scored 99 rushing TDs. He also punished me for not playing him in Fantasy Football (as far back as 1994).

5) OJ Simpson - the Juice is on the Loose. (Remember we are only talking football here). He was the first runner to crack the vaunted 2,000 yard mark, and he did it in just 14 games. He also leads all runners with six career 200-yard games.

Watch out for Marshall Faulk and Ladainian Tomlinson and as they could crack the top five with a solid return (Faulk) and continued excellence.

What up with you leaving out Gale Sayers, Marcus Allen and Eric Dickerson. OJ should not be on any lists.

Emmitt is overrated. He played behind a huge offensive line and had great weapons on O. Heck, if any of these backs had that line + Aikman + Irvin + Novacek they could run for 20K yds.

I'm going to have to go with Barry Sanders at number 2. Emmitt had to play 28 years and go the sucker route by playing for the cardinals. If Barry played with a team that had any sort of talent in the front office and on the field, no telling how many rushing yards he would've ended up with. But Jim Brown is undisputably the GOAT
